盆栽の素材作り
盆栽の素材を作るための、方法の1つ「実生」について紹介します。「実生」は、種を蒔くところから始め、生長させて素材を作る方法です。
実生を始めてから盆栽として鑑賞できるようになるまで長期間かかりますが、中にはミニ盆栽として実生1年目から楽しめるものもあります。
実生の長所としては、多くの素材を一度に作ることができるので、傷がなく素直な素材を選択できることです。
一方、欠点は、親木の素質を受け継ぐ場合が多いことです。
また、親木が優れた素質をもっていて、その種を蒔いても、その素質を100％受け継ぐとは限りません。
ただ、さまざまな素質が現れるので、良質のものが思いがけず出てくることもあります。
次は、種を蒔く時期についてです。
種を採取したら、すぐに蒔くほうが良いのですが、冬の乾燥や凍害などに対する管理に手間がかかります。
管理するための設備がない場合は、種の乾燥を防いで保存し、春になったら蒔くようにしましょう。
最後に蒔き方です。
蒔く前日に種を水に浸けておき、水に浮いている種は発芽しないため取り除いてください。
蒔くときには、発芽して生長したときに葉が込み合ってしまわないように、間隔を空けて蒔いてください。
そして、土を種が隠れる程度にかぶせ、細めのジョウロを使って、土が流れ出ないように水をたっぷりと与えます。
種を播くとろから行う実生は、最初から盆栽の変化や生長を観察できるので、とても楽しく愛着が沸き、味のある盆栽が育てられます。
